psychotherapy:

A video streaming site called Documentary Heaven has, among other things, a stack load of high quality psychology documentaries for your viewing pleasure.

They’re drawn from TV so they’re a bit of a mixed bunch from the lamentable BBC series ‘The Human Mind’, to the excellent biography of mathematician and subject of ‘A Beautiful Mind’ John Nash and the simply sublime programme ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ on Friedrich Nietzsche.

The definition of psychology is a little bit wide, but there’s plenty of good material to check out. In addition, I’d recommend the remarkable ‘Dr Money and the Boy with No Penis’, the level-headed documentary ‘Psychopath’, an informative BBC programme entitled ‘How Does Your Memory Work?’ and a good piece on synaesthesia called ‘Derek Tastes of Earwax’.

Not all of the links work and some are clearly drivel (‘The Secret’? Mercy no) but there are some gems there and hopefully a few starters above. Don’t miss the ‘Older Entries’ link at the bottom of the page for more.

Your observer is the part of you who is able to look at your thoughts and realize the separateness between you and your thoughts. Your observer is your higher self—your soul self—the part of you who is actually able to notice when you are feeling, saying, or doing something without subjectivity.

Why I Love My MINI #2

My MINI reminds me to play, have fun and stay optimistic. Yeah, that’s me in the pepper white Cooper hugging corners (did someone say lateral acceleration?!?) and grooving to funky beats as I pass by. I do find it strange that a car can make me feel this way but what can I say? I’m utterly in love with my MINI.

A little reflection soon shows how inconceivable it is really to love others (not merely to need them), if one cannot love oneself as one really is. And how could a person do that if, from the very beginning, he has had no chance to experience his true feelings and to learn to know himself? For the majority of sensitive people, the true self remains deeply and thoroughly hidden. But how can you love something you do not know, something that has never been loved? So it is that many a gifted person lives without any notion of his or her true self.
– Alice Miller, The Drama of The Gifted Child (via psychotherapy)
When you place a value on things like health, love, sex and other things, and learn to place a material value on what you’ve previously discounted for being merely intangible, a thing not seen, you realize you’re much much wealthier than you ever imagined.
– Rory Sutherland (via doublebagel) (via quote-book)
Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.
– Alfred Adler (via psychotherapy) (via quote-book)
Love this funky looking classic mini cooper designed by Paul Smith. I’d love a subtler version of those stripes on the roof of my MINI.

Love this video. What a funny way of capturing some of the characteristics of MINI drivers!
